GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Crews have started work on a new five-story, high-end apartment complex along the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids.
Orion Construction crews and development officials gathered Tuesday at 1001 Monroe Avenue NW to break ground on the River’s Edge Apartment project.
It’s a $10.2 million, five-story, 57,000-square-foot mixed-use project that will sit next to Canal Park.A courtesy rendering of the proposed River’s Edge Apartments.
“This is a very long historical site. From an old taxi cab company, to a law office, now to a five-story high-end executive apartment project,” John Wheeler, president of Orion Real Estate Solutions, told 24 Hour News 8 at the groundbreaking.
The riverfront building will feature 32 apartments, indoor parking, outdoor balconies, an art walk and a rooftop patio.
“This is a big game changer for us,” Wheeler said.
But the project will serve more than just tenants.
A locally-owned, “farm-to-fork” restaurant will sit on the ground floor. It will feature outdoor dining and will be open to the public. Specific details surrounding the restaurant haven’t been released.
Wheeler said the project should be completed in about eight to 12 months. Passersby could start seeing progress as early as next week.
The cost of rent will reflect the property and the market. Wheeler said a one-bedroom apartment will likely cost around $1,200. A two-bedroom apartment will cost about $1,800.
A website will be available in the coming months for people interested in renting.
