Work on an apartment project on the edge of the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids has officially started.

Grand Rapids-based Orion Construction broke ground this week on its mixed-use River’s Edge, at 1001 Monroe Ave. NW.

The 57,103-square-foot, five-story project will include a restaurant on the ground floor and 32 apartment units.

The units will be a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments, ranging from 680 to 1,100 square feet.

Orion purchased the site in 2014 for $1.3 million and tore down a former office building on the site last November, followed by site preparation.

The project is expected to finish up next spring.

Firms on the project

SIBSCO is an investor in the Orion project.

Progressive AE is the architect on the project.

Chemical Bank is the bank on the project.

Michigan Economic Development Corporation, or MEDC, also provided state incentives for the project.

Orion projects

The construction firm has multiple projects ongoing in Grand Rapids, including the $22-million Venue Tower apartment project.

The firm completed the $45-million Arena Place last year and built the recently opened 20 Monroe Live, which is attached to Venue Tower.

Orion’s Gateway at Belknap and Fulton Square projects have both begun leasing as well.

Warner Tower, a $63.5-million, two-tower development by Orion with office and hotel components, is expected to break ground later this year at 150 Ottawa Ave. NW.
