On June 17, Orion Construction and Dwelling Place provided a sneak peek of the construction progress at Hope Apartments, a new affordable housing development in Holland that is nearing completion and preparing to welcome its first residents.

The Hope Apartments project, 100 W. 10th Street, is part of the broader Kollen Park-Hope Housing Development, a collaborative effort between Dwelling Place, Hope Church, Community Action House, the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, the City of Holland, and Orion Construction. Together, the partners are creating 52 new affordable homes across two sites to help address Ottawa County’s growing housing needs while providing stable, high-quality housing opportunities for local residents.

With construction entering its final stages and pre-leasing now underway, Hope Apartments is set to begin accepting applications as soon as July 1. Construction for the Kollen Park housing development is expected to be complete in February 2027.

Once complete, Hope Apartments will include 14 units: 13 one-bedrooms and a two-bedroom. With priority for tenants who have disabilities, the apartments will include wheelchair-accessible floor plans with options to install grab bars and adjust feature heights to accommodate specific needs. The two-story building also has an elevator.

Orion Construction President Brad Walsh said the construction process has gone smoothly.

“We’re in that finished mode of construction, so within the next two, three months, we’ll be turning this over,” Walsh told FOX 17. “While 14 units doesn’t seem like a lot, it’ll mean a lot to the people who do move in here.”

Hope Apartments is part of a broader effort to address a growing affordable housing shortage in Ottawa County.

“We’ve seen a pretty significant but steady need for affordable housing,” said Nathan Poel, director of real estate development at Dwelling Place. “This community has done a fantastic job of stepping up, trying to find, advocate for, and allocate resources towards affordable housing, but there is still a gap.”

Hope Apartments will give preference to people with disabilities and includes MSHDA 811 vouchers to provide supplemental income for residents to help cover housing costs, according to Poel. A handful of units will also be set aside for tribal members.

“It’s very tough to find affordable housing, especially if you have significant physical needs that need to be accommodated,” Poel told WOOD TV 8. “Accessible housing is very hard to come by in a lot of communities. That’s why we’ve designed this housing specifically to have 100% accessible units.

“We’re very proud of this building, and the site, and the team that was able to put it together,” Poel added.

“We’re happy to be part of the project and happy to give back to the West Michigan community, especially Holland,” said Walsh.
