Here at Orion, our subcontractors are an extension of our team. We take pride in selecting the right trade partners for each project. By working together, we can ensure the best possible outcome for all stakeholders involved. Plus, since we don’t self-perform work, we are never in a position to compete with our subcontractors or have a conflict of interest.
Orion Construction is dedicated to promoting the use of minority, women, and veteran-owned business enterprises (MWVBE) in our building programs. We believe that by bringing a group of diverse people together in an inclusive manner, we can better innovate and solve the problems that face our community.
In addition to personally soliciting firms, Orion Construction actively participates in community MWVBE outreach programs, including hosting and facilitating seminar courses and providing various technical assistance. We also focus on networking events such as pre-bid meetings and plan review sessions with the project team to engage with MWVBEs.
The results of Orion Construction’s commitment were most evident at the Garfield Park Lofts and West Garfield developments where we exceeded the City of Grand Rapids Community Development Section 3 requirements while completing the project on time and under budget. Through the process, we provided information and resources as well as served as a liaison to encourage local contractor participation.
We are dedicated to achieving a “boots on the ground” approach with our labor force, meaning we strive to buy locally and use local subcontractors. Likewise, we encourage our subcontractors to employ as many local employees as possible because supporting local creates good jobs, boosts equity, and supports good value. Simply put, no matter the community, it’s important to keep resources local.
Our goal of developing long-lasting relationships with our subcontractors and suppliers begin with prequalification.
