Orion Construction, in partnership with Linc Up and the Dwelling Place, has received the U.S. Green Building Council of West Michigan (USGBC-WM) Certified Green Building Award-Multifamily for its Garfield Park Lofts project in Grand Rapids.

The USGBC-WM Leadership Awards, which took place during USGBC-WM’s annual leadership ceremony on March 10, promote outstanding green building initiatives by recognizing projects, organizations, and people who have made extraordinary contributions to achieving healthy, energy-efficient green buildings throughout Michigan. The organization’s Certified Green Building Award recognizes exemplary building projects that received high-performance certifications.

Garfield Park Lofts, one of Linc Up’s most recent projects, is a 36-unit workforce housing project in Grand Rapids’ Garfield Park neighborhood. Orion Construction, Linc Up, and the Dwelling Place worked together to utilize public-private partnerships, such as a low-income housing tax credit with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority to help finance the project. Construction of the three-story building began following the abatement and removal of a vacant church.

The LEED Gold Certified, 45,000 square-foot building, surrounded by new sidewalk improvements along Burton Street SE, is the first new commercial construction project in Garfield Park in the last 30 years. The project served as an economic catalyst as a result of the hiring of local and neighborhood subcontractors, suppliers, and laborers. The lofts are currently fully leased after a flood of 500 applications.

“At Linc Up, we believe everyone has a right to safe, high-quality, environmentally friendly housing. We have a long way to go to make that a reality in Grand Rapids,” said Adam Vanderlaan, Linc Up construction manager. “Working with partners who are committed to long-term sustainability and using the best materials to make homes safe to live in is a priority for LINC UP and we’re honored to receive the Certified Green Building Award Winner.”
