Developers Wednesday celebrated the ceremonial “topping off” of The Exchange building with the final concrete pour on the 15-story, 340,000 square-foot building.
From here, Orion Construction will enclose the building and workers will transform the interior into 133 apartments, offices and a ground floor retail space.
The Exchange is in the heart of downtown, at the southeast corner of Rose Street and Michigan Avenue. The $52 million project was first announced in 2011. Work began in April 2017.
“Just to put it into terms or perspective, we’ve got about 50 miles of city sidewalk, would be the yardage of concrete, 1,200 tons of rebar, man-hours just on the ‘crete is about 10 years,” explained project manager Lee Garrity. “A lot has gone into this. We appreciate everyone who has worked so hard to get us to this point.”
Work on The Exchange should wrap up in the summer of 2019. Phoenix Properties owner says Chemical Bank and Rx Optical have signed on to open in the building. More businesses will be announced in early 2019.
